Planet Fitness New Equipment 2026: What's Changed

Planet Fitness has been upgrading locations across the country. Here's every new piece of equipment and whether PF is finally worth it for serious lifters.

The Big Picture

Planet Fitness has been investing heavily in equipment upgrades across their 2,500+ locations. The most significant changes: more functional training areas, updated Life Fitness cardio with integrated screens, expanded dumbbell ranges at select locations, and new selectorized machines from Life Fitness' latest line. However, the fundamental PF philosophy hasn't changed — this is still a machine-focused, beginner-friendly environment, not a powerlifting gym.

What's Still Missing at Planet Fitness

Despite the upgrades, Planet Fitness still has fundamental limitations for serious training:

❌ Still Not Available

  • Olympic barbells (45 lb bars)
  • Power racks / squat racks
  • Deadlift platforms
  • Bumper plates for Olympic lifts
  • Heavy dumbbells (most still max at 60 lbs)
  • GHD machines
  • Competition benches

✅ Home Gym Alternatives

  • Titan T-3 power rack ($389)
  • CAP Olympic barbell ($90)
  • 300 lb plate set ($200-400)
  • Adjustable dumbbells to 80 lbs ($400-625)
  • Stall mat flooring ($45/mat)
  • Total: $1,124-1,549 (one-time)

The math: A PF Classical membership is $15/month. A home gym that surpasses PF's capabilities costs $1,200-1,500 — paid for in 6.5-8 years of membership savings. And the home gym has no commute time, no waiting for equipment, and unlimited heavy lifting.

Who Planet Fitness Is (and Isn't) For

✅ PF Is Great For

  • • Complete beginners to fitness
  • • Cardio-focused training (walking, running, biking)
  • • Machine-based strength training
  • • People who need social motivation
  • • Budget-conscious ($15-25/month)
  • • Travelers (2,500+ locations nationwide)

❌ PF Is Not For

  • • Powerlifters / Olympic lifters
  • • Anyone who wants to squat or deadlift with a barbell
  • • Advanced lifters needing 60+ lb dumbbells
  • • People who prefer free weights over machines
  • • CrossFit-style training
  • • Anyone training for competitive strength sports

FAQ

Does Planet Fitness have squat racks now?

No. As of 2026, standard Planet Fitness locations still do not have squat racks or power racks. They have Smith machines, which guide the barbell on a fixed vertical track. While Smith machines allow you to do squats and bench press, they don't train stabilizer muscles the same way free barbells do. Some PF Plus locations may have limited free-weight areas, but true squat racks remain absent from the standard PF model.

When does Planet Fitness upgrade equipment at my location?

Planet Fitness franchises upgrade equipment on their own schedules — there's no nationwide date. Most locations refresh equipment every 5-7 years. Newer and recently renovated locations tend to have the latest Integrity Series cardio and Insignia Series strength machines. Ask your local PF front desk about planned equipment upgrades.
